Rachael Yamagata is a storyteller with a compassion for the darker side of relationships. Her fans gravitate towards her ability to articulate emotion that captures equal parts nostalgia and sadness along with a sense of hopefulness. She writes at 4am and whisper sings like a voice in your head. Rachael's songs lend themselves well to cinematic storytelling and she's had numerous tracks featured in film and television. Alabama Shakes - World Cafe Live

This band has quite a different style from the rest of the artists featured on this blog. I started listening to them after NPR mentioned them as one of the best new bands of 2011.
As it's evident on my profile pic, I'm a huge Janis Joplin fan. You can definitely hear her influence on Brittany Howard's singing, and it was what ultimately draw me to them.
They are so powerful live. A fantastic display of blues and soul on stage. 
Here's a great set from their show in Philadelphia on April 9th, broadcast on WXPN radio.
